Shimna College’s Irish Department has forged links with 3 local Irish Medium providers in Castlewellan, Downpatrick and Newry.

Each year Shimna students who have transferred from Irish Medium primaries sit their GCSE in Irish early, with spectacular results.  Our pioneer, Meadbh Ni Hir, who achieved her A* in year 8, has now also achieved grade A in her AS level Irish while still in year 11.  Education minister Caitriona Ruane was on hand at Shimna on results day to present Meadbh with her results.  We are very proud of the contribution to integration which our Irish Medium students bring.  For example, last year, the party of students laying our wreath at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, was all Irish speaking.
