GCSE Geography

In Year 11 students study Physical Geography: The Restless Earth; The Coastal Zone and Water on the Land. We conduct a study of the Shimna River from source to mouth for our coursework, worth 25% of the overall grade at GCSE.

In Year 12 Human Geography topics are studied: Population Change; The Development Gap and Tourism.

Our students are encouraged through the study of geography to fully appreciate the beautiful natural environment in which they live.  We place a great deal of emphasis on using up-to-date case studies and examples, for example recent flooding in Fermanagh in the Water on the Land topic and the implications of an ageing population in Europe in Population Change.

Sustainable development is a key concept in all topics.  For example, in The Coastal Zone, strategies for coastal management are underpinned by the need for a sustainable approach.  In Tourism we discuss the issues surrounding mass tourism as well as recent trends like ecotourism and adventure tourism.

Topics have been chosen to reflect current thinking and interests in geography in the 21st Century.  We discuss and debate real issues such as fair trade in The Development Gap and help students to formulate and share their own opinions.  Hopefully this will encourage them to make a positive difference to the world around them.
