 Academic Experience

In addition to wanting Integrated education, parents want an excellent education for their children. We are in a perfect position to vindicate the leap of faith of our founding parents and to point to our outstanding academic reputation.

Our foundation year of students from 1994 has already produced our first PhDs, medical students, veterinary students, law students, engineering students etc., a member of the current Shimna Board of Governors and members of the current Shimna staff.

In our very first year of GCSE results, Shimna students topped the performance tables in the SEELB. Those first results have been bettered by our students in every year since then. Such excellent results are a tribute to the students themselves. The results are also a tribute to an inspirational teaching staff and to the support and confidence of their parents.

We pride ourselves on the breadth of our A level provision and the range of study options taken up by our students at university.

Above all we pride ourselves that Shimna’s results have been achieved in an all-ability context, where all students are entered for at least nine subjects at GCSE, achieving a pass rate for the college of 99%. Performance tables can lead schools to dissuade students from entering for the full range of subjects, but at Shimna we are vindicated in our policy of high expectations for every student.

Partnership with the Open University

Through our partnership with the Open University, our A level students have access to the YASS programme whereby our students can take on units of study from the OU degree programmes and experience a taste of higher education alongside their school work.  So far, students have completed courses in Italian, in Personal Finance in Creative Writing, in Understanding Human Nutrition and, most recently, in Bookeeping and Accountancy and Medicine, Molecules and Drugs - a Chemical Approach.

Our students have also benfitted from additional experience at Villiers Park courses in Cambridge in: geography; history; genetics; French; biomedical science; creative writing; English literature.
